Subject(s): Summary: Poland realised its ambition to join NATO in 1999. This paper investigates how successful Polish efforts have been to reform the armed forces to meet the requirements of this membership in terms of 3 broad areas. The first looks at the efforts to dismantle the legacy of the Warsaw Pact to provide a new basis upon which to develop the armed forces. The second examines the retrenchment and restructuring of military personnel and the shaping of its infrastructure to meet the needs of smaller armed forces in NATO. The third considers the problem of modernisation of the armed forces by looking at the evolution of its post-Cold War force structure, its re-equipment needs and resources available to meet these procurement programmes.
