Summary: Intended for non-expert readers, this book sets out to debunk some of the myths, misconceptions and half-truths about poison gas. It provides a history of the development and use of gas in warfare, asks why gas was not used in the second world war, and sets out the instances of use of gas since 1945. Further chapters describe the advantages and disadvantages of gas in war, protective measures, the Chemical Weapons Convention, and steps for public protection in the evewnt of a terrorist gas attack. Appendix C lists a variety of poison gasses in each case providing how it works, colour, odour, onset, symptoms, detection, protection, treatment, antidote, persistency.
