This is a first hand account by a Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army of the campaign against Port Arthur, Russia's ice-free port in China during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. The impact of this war was considerable being the first Asian victory over a European power since the thirteenth century. The book also introduces the concept of yamato-damashii (traditional Japanese spirit) which was such an important element in maintaining morale, discipline, and cohesion among the Japanese troops.
