Sets out to establish why the Battle of Trafalgar had so much effect on naval strategy in the following hundred years. In particular considers the effect of the last great decisive battle under sail on strategy using very different technolgies and with different objectives. In Nelson's day one tried to capture the opponents ships, by the first world war the objective was to destroy them.
