Study of the sort of defence industry capability required by the United States in the first decades of the 21st century. Notes changing threats to U.S. national security, the globalisation and downsizing of defence manufacturing in much of the world, declining military budgets, and the trend during the 1990s of defence industry mergers and consolidations. Also considers the potential of crossover between commercial and defence specific manufacturing, and the use of COTS noting some of the possible drawbacks of this approach.
