Report of a study conference held at the Australian Defence Force Academy, 4-6 May 1998. The objective was to promote interaction between scientists and engineers interested in solving defence related problems. Four problems were presented and discussed. These were: Fumes in cockpit of Hornet aircraft; detection of landmines; how to calculate safe areas in firing ranges taking account of ricochets; and reducing infra red or thermal image signatures of inflatable boats powered by outboard engines, and carrying at least six passengers.
