The Battle of Nomonhan took place weeks before the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and was the result of conflicting claims of the Japanese and Soviets over the 'borders' between Mongolia and Manchuria. The aftermath of the battle saw 20,000 Japanese casualties and the end of their search for territorial expansion in Northern Asia. The Japanese then turned their attention to Malaya, Singapore, Burma and so on.
