Summary: A study of the policing of public order in late 20th century London. The study investigates how confrontational government policies generated increased numbers of public protests which in turn lead the government to increase police powers and equipment. There has been concern about a drift to authoritarianism in Britain since the 1970s. Police powers are now considerable but senior officers are extremely reluctant to use them because to do so would cause further trouble. Protests considered in this book include the poll tax, miners strikes, gay rights, and the Gulf War.
