Guest editorial: antenna systems for 5G and beyond/ Mohammad A. Matin, Mohammad S. Sharawi, Sotirios K. Goudos, Jiang Zhu

By: Contributor(s): Material type: TextTextPublication details: 2022Subject(s): Online resources: In: IEEE Communications Magazine Vol 60, No 1, January 2022. pp.12-13 (147)Summary: Fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) wireless communications will provide services under different promising usage scenarios and applications including enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), high-reliability low-latency communications (HRLLC), and massive machine type communications (mMTC) with stringent performance attributes such as higher system capacity, low latency, high reliability, greater spectral effi ciency, as well as enabling massive internet of Things (mIoT) for a fully connected, intelligent digital world. Antennas are vital components in wireless systems that directly aff ect their performance. Novel and innovative solutions in antenna design are required for reliable performance and to reduce complexities and diffi culties in system integration across a diverse range of devices and platforms. The Call for Papers for this Feature Topic (FT) attracted a good number of submissions from all over the world. All submissions received at least three reviews, and the accepted papers went through at least one round of revision. The FT articles in this issue highlight current research and development (R&D) trends and findings in the design and applications of antennas for 5G and B5G wireless communications, as well as all aspects of integration techniques of these antenna systems into future networks. The articles highlight and open the door for more novel research in antenna system design and development for B5G. They are briefly summarized here.
