Detailed study of relations between America and Japan from the late 19th century up to 1941 with special reference to the early part of the second world war. Using numerous examples the book shows how the American "Magic" decoding system failed to correctly translate secret Japanese messages. The effect of this, according to the author, was to create misconceptions and misunderstandings leading to deep distrust on the part of the USA which directly contributed to war between the two countries.
