Argues that the human propensity for warfare is a product of evolution - in essence it is to gain and protect vital resources. Suggests that conflict is, in the widest senses, emotionally and physically stimulating, and that the threat of attack has promoted the rapid growth of human intelligence and social development. An understanding of the evolution of diseases will play an increasingly important role in conflict as the use of biological weapons grows. Also provides an evolutionary explanation for the roots of ethnic conflict through xenophobia and ethnocentrism.
