Study of the rise of terrorism under the label of jihad. Argues that the commonly held assumptions about the causes of terrorism (poverty, trauma, ignorance) are wrong. Instead it is suggested that for the majority of mujahedin social ties predate ideological commitment and it was these social networks that inspired alienated young Muslim men to join the jihad.
