Tarawa, a tiny coral atoll in what is now Kiribati in the Pacific Ocean, was part of Japan's outermost defensive ring and became the first of the island hoping battles that led inexorably to Japan's defeat. It was also the battle that brought home to the American public the fighting capacity of Japanese troops and the terrible cost of total war.
