Major General Mike Smith was deputy force commander of the UNTAET peacekeeping force in East Timor and also had been closely involved in the planning for its predecessor INTERFET. In this book he analyses the successes and failures of the U.N. interventions in East Timor from 1999 to 2001, evaluates the lessons learned, and from these highlights the urgent need for reforms within the U.N. without which the U.N. will not be able to respond effectively to future crises.
