However this growth has been matched by serious increases in air soil and water pollution. This study of several craft villages in the Red River Delta area of northern Vietnam describes the risks of craft village manufacturing, the environmental and health impacts of pollution, the importance of economic and social relationships, and the limitations of regulations as the sole means of controlling pollution. Argues that craft village producers are well aware of the risks but lack the resources to take appropriate action. Calls for a holistic approach which would recognise the complex social, economic and cultural relationships involved.
