Description and critique of the securitisation carried out by successive British and American governments over more than fifty years, which has transformed Diego Garcia (an island in the Indian Ocean) into a military installation that is "off limits to casual tourists, the media, and strikingly its inhabitants". The article shows that securitisation is an ongoing process not a one-off action, and also considers whether and how securitisation could be challenged.
