In this analysis of the factors affecting security in Southeast Asia attention is given first to internal causes of unrest: ethnic tensions and the failure of states to meet popular expectations in their drive to develop strong nation-state identities. Secondly attention focusses on traditional and non traditional security threats and thier interactions; next the mechanisms for inter-state security and the role of ASEAN are discussed, as are relations with powers outside the region (e.g. ASEAN Plus Three); and finally the specific cases of the South China Sea and international terrorism are addressed.
