Originally published as a special issue of The Journal of Strategic Studies, Vol 19 no 4, Dec 1996.
Collection of ten papers on different aspects of land warfare ranging from the Mexican-American wars of 1846-1848 and the Spanish-American war in Cuba 1895-1898, then across the twentieth century covering expeditionary warfare and small wars, as well as the massed battles of the Second World War. Concludes with two papers looking at likely future developments: manoevre theory in operations other than war, and the future battlefield up to 2025.
