Study of the evolution of Japan's maritime defence strategy and its state of the art submarine force. Argues that this has been consistent with Japan's need to ensure the security of sea borne trade on which the country relies. In recent years policy has also been affected by the rise of China as a potential naval competitor for control of those same strategic points.
