Based mainly on information from Singapore, China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, this article concludes that the Asian education model is not much different to those in other parts of the world; what is different is that the model has the support of teachers, parents, and students, that there is a strong belief in the power of effort over innate ability, and that the education systems are closely aligned with national goals. The effect in terms of the international standing of universities and research centres is also noted.
