Based on extensive fieldwork in and around Fuzhou this study of Chinese migration to the USA finds that one of the principle drivers is the need to provide security and social standing for family, especially parents, in China and that this is a long standing tradition. Describes the processes and economics of people smuggling and concludes that organized crime does not play a major part.
