Study of regionalism in Asia and the factors that influence it. Considers both spontaneous and deliberate acts of integration and assesses trade, politics, foreign policy, and security. Notes the existence of a range of groupings that are likened to concentric circles with the 5 ASEAN founders at the core, ASEAN+3, the ARF and dialogue partners further out, and the East Asia Summit convened in 2005 that includes India, Australia, and New Zealand with the furthest spread. Other circles of influence such as APEC intersect with these regional groups. The final part of the book considers opportunities, obstacles and threats to the integration process.
