Efforts aimed at reforming the Indonesian military (TNI) have tended to focus on depoliticising the armed forces and demilitiarising politics. Little attention has been given to developing professionalism in the military, capacity building, or to the application of strategic thinking (the military academy curriculum is said to be unchanged since the 1960s). This article considers how the TNI could benefit from studying Clausewitz as part of the process of education in military and strategic thinking.
