Extensively illustrated with photographs this guide is arranged in three main sections: Part one covers submarine history from earliest efforts in the 17th and 18th centuries to the Kursk tragedy of August 2000 and the development of deep sea rescue systems; Part two covers submarines by country up to the end of the Second World War; Part three covers the period since 1945 with entries arranged by country in order of sea power rather than alphabetically. Coverage is selective not comprehensive.
