Shows how this was encouraged by anti-Semitism in Russia and Europe, and how Zionists lobbied for support especially in the USA. Complicating factors were great power competition for access to Middle East oil and the need for a united front against the USSR after the Second World War. The book shows how all these pressures led to the first Arab Israeli war and contained the seeds of subsequent conflicts. Each war is covered in detail as are more recent events such as the tortuous peace negotiations and the al Aqsa intifada which take the story up to 2003.
