Summary, etc. This is an interesting book about using mathematics and the scientific method to maximize success of naval missions. Some of these techniques date back to World War Two and are still effective. Some require simple algebra. Others depend on the power of computer analysis. Chap 1. Operations Analysis: A Scientific Approach to the Resolution of Operations Problems Chap 2. The Formation and Solution of a Problem: being clear about what you want to accomplish. Do you want to maximize shooting down of airplanes that are attacking your ships, or do you want to minimize the number of ships sunk. Chap 3. The Decision: Payoff matrixes and optimizing them for highest possible payoff, highest average payoff, highest guaranteed payoff or least regret. Game theory, saddle point games, mixed strategies. Chap 4. Detection Theory: probability of detection given separated glimpses, continuous looking, continuous looking in an unchanging environment. Detection as a function of range. Inverse cube law of detection. Factors impacting the effectiveness of humans in the detection process including duration, work-rest schedules, immobility, physical expenditure, monotony, success pressure, time pressure, heat, comfort, glare, illumination, noise and vibration. Chap 5. Radar Detection Theory and Electronic Warfare: Radar equation. Radar horizon, blip theory, and jamming. Chap 6. Lateral Range Curves and Sweep Width: Basic math. Simplifications. Spacing between searchers. Chap 7. Search and Patrol: What if you are looking for something on the ocean and want to calculate the odds that you will find it. What if you knew where it was an hour ago? What if it is moving? Chap 8. Barrier Patrols Chap 9. Sonar Detection Chap 10. Screening. The probability of penetrating a screen undetected. Optimal placement of screen. Increasing Screen Effectiveness Chap 11. Anti-Air Warfare. Disposition of CAP. Chap 12. Mine Warfare. Objectives. Countermeasures. Planning. Patterns. Random minefields. Chap 13. Systems Effectiveness and Reliability Chap 14. Modern Techniques of OA. Linear programming. Dynamic programming. Information theory. Appendix I. Probability - The Mathematics of Uncertainty. 36 page
