Summary, etc. The islamist militant group Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) had been killed. Since 2003 US- trained AFP troops have employed a strategy known as Balikatan 2002. This approach comprises three elements counter-insurgency tactics civic action and denying militants sanctuary among other extremist groups. This third aspect of the strategy has been crucial in enabling the Philippines army to isolate ASG militants. In terms of alliances while the ASG has close links to the Indonesian militant group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).
