Summary, etc. Over the last 10-15 years the ballistic protection of armoured vehicles has evolved from the heavy armour of the late Cold War era to lighter more versatile protection designed to withstand 14.5mm AP rounds (NATO STANAG 4569), blast mines, penetrator mines, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Attention has also been given to the use of explosive reactive armour and to active protection 'though the later has yet to reach production vehicles.
