Summary, etc. The on-going insurgency in Iraq has spurred the study of previous insurgencies, particularly Marxist ones, of the twentieth century for clues on how to organise effective countermeasures. This article argues that such analysis may be wasted effort if the differences between Maoist people's wars and modern insurgencies are not understood, and suggests a more fruitful line of approach.
