Summary, etc. This article suggests that looking at America's own history may provide clues about what China will do in the future. In 1898 the US had regional and imperial ambitions in the Caribbean and the Pacific respectively. In dealing with Britain the U.S. used careful diplomacy rather than military competition to achieve its ends. Argues that the US position vis-a-vis China now is analagous to that of Britain with America a century ago.
