Summary, etc. Jellyfish stings can be extremely painful, dangerous or in some cases cause death. Vinegar (an acetic acid solution) is widely recommended as part of the treatment regime. This article reports a study which found that discharged nematocysts of C fleckeri (large box jellyfish) are reactivated by vinegar. If the tendrils containing the stinging sacs are still on the body application of vinegar can thus cause further harm to the person already suffering effects of stings.
