Summary, etc. Technological developments have from time to time been identified as posing fundamental threats to navies, either as direct threats to ships or by making navies themselves redundant. This article argues that technology also enables the development of countermeasures, and that ships are essential to achieving control of the sea. Concludes that navies may have become more expensive but they can no more be dispensed with than can armies or air forces.
