Upgrading the equipment used by frontline soldiers is a considerable challenge especially when planned programmes are superceded by urgent operational requirements. In addition to implementation difficulties there are the highly practical issues of the life of the batteries on which so much high tech equipment depends, and the sheer weight of kit soldiers are expected to carry - a recent study found US Marines assault load was 2-3 times greater than the recommended 22kg.
