Historical assessment of America's counterterrorism efforts. According to this book these were initially developed from British experience in policing the empire and first used during the latter stages of the Second World War to defeat Nazi Germany. It is suggested that early successes may have led to a false sense of security when it came to the possibility of attacks on the American homeland. Meanwhile U.S. government behaviour in response to the 9-11 attacks (abductions, internment without trial, as well as wholesale unauthorised spying on the American people) has been, to say the least, politically insensitive, and may cause lasting damage to American standing in the international arena.
