Military misfortunes : the anatomy of failure in war / Eliot A. Cohen, John Gooch. - New York : Free Press, 2006 - 302 p.

Originally published in hardcover by the Free Press... New York , 1990

Study, drawing on various examples, of what goes wrong when apparently competent militaries fail to achieve victory; what von Manstein described as lost victories. These failures are assessed as failure to learn: U.S. antisubmarine warfare in 1942; failure to anticipate: Israel's defence of Suez and the golan Heights 1973; failure to adapt: Britsh at Gallipoli 1915; aggregate failure: defeat of the American Eighth Army in Korea 1950; Catstrophic failure: the fall of France 1940. The new afterword briefly asks what went wrong with America's invasion of Iraq - why were U.S. forces apparently unprepared for an insurgency when so many examples were available and had already been studied.
