Strategic hedging and the future of Asia-Pacific stability / Evan S Medeiros - 2006

China and the USA are vying for competitive advantage in the Asia-Pacific. Both parties are pursuing policies that stress engagement and integration, while at the same time also seeking security cooperation with regional powers and supporting military modernization programmes. The article notes that if this hedging is not very carefully managed there is a risk of a shift towards rivalry and regional instability.
