China has a long standing commitment to achieving self-reliance especially in defence. This article looks at what China has acheived so far (including a huge defence industrial sector able to deliver both conventional and nuclear weapons ) but notes that in high tech areas the achievements are still modest. Outlines the steps China is now taking to overcome this limitation.
