The Royal Thai Navy - 2005

Thailand needs to maintain naval forces on two coasts to oversee its interest in the Andaman Sea (facinf Myanmar and India on the Malay Peninsula) and the Gulf of Thailand (facing Cambodia, Vietnam and the Spratly Islands). From a law enforcement and internal security perspective, the Thai Government believes a larger Navy and police force are essential to interdict regional narcotics and illegal arms trafficking, and to suppress piracy and smuggling. The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is also relied upon to protect Thailand's borders from any spillover resulting from the intenal insurgencies that plague neighbouring states, Cambodia and Myanmar. This article gives an outlook on the future on the Royal Thai Navy.
