The continuing enigma of what happened to Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 MH370 and its 239 passengers and crew on 8 March last year, has raised awareness of the importance of being able to identify and track aircraft movements, military or civil, in national air space at all times. The nature of many long-haul, over-water flight paths inevitably leads to periods when passenger aircraft have to exit controlled air space and fly on beyond surface radar coverage until they enter the next controlled zone.
