Study of the current state of relations between China and Russia with particular reference to their shared boundary areas in Central Asia. Suggests that Russia's renewed interest in Asia may be more a result of the unsatisfactory outcomes of its attempts at engagement with the West than a real desire for closer ties with China. Concludes that China has the upper hand in Central Asia and elsewhere, and doubts whether long term ties between the two will be enhanced.
