The use of aluminium in ship structure has initiated investigation regarding aluminium survivability. In this article, the authors address multiple historical events that are often cited when discussing aluminium's survivability, including the fire that destroyed the superstructure of USS Belknap and the Falkland Islands War. It then goes on to discuss the current state-of-the-art in aluminium armour that offers marine designers lightweight options to increase protection as maritime operators see increasing operations and low-intensity threats in the littorals.
