Ghost martyrs in Iraq : an assessment of the applicability of rationalist models to explain suicide attacks in Iraq / Nick Ayers - 2008

Describes four different rationalist models of suicide attacks then applies them using data from events in Iraq. Finds that although the results are not conclusive the indications are that suicide attacks are used for tactical advantage and to support recruiting efforts of al-Qaeda linked organizations. They are not used to gain nationalist objectives, signal strength to a foreign government, or to outdo rival groups.
