East Asia's rapid economic growth has not been matched by the development of multilateral organizations. according to this book in 2005 there were none at all in Northeast Asia and just two in Southeast Asia that East Asia participated in. The book considers how this dearth came about, why bilateral relations flourished instead, what steps were taken to develop regional security architectures, and how current economic and political dynamics may influence regional multilateralism in the future.
